Special Inspections are an integral and vital component for safe and code-compliant construction. This course will review the fundamentals of Special Inspection requirements in accordance with Chapter 17 of the 2022 NYC Building Code, Article §28-115 of the NYC Administrative Code, RCNY §101-06, RCNY §101-07, RCNY §16-01, and RCNY §17-01. An emphasis will be placed on misunderstood inspection types to provide a clearer insight into the methods, frequency and reasoning behind each type.

This course will review the history, properties, health issues, and compliance that governs obligated parties in regard to asbestos investigations in NYC. The information presented is in accordance with AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act), DEP (Department of Environmental Protection), EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission), and NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

The presentation revolves around the history and evolution of the most ambitious Green Law enacted to date by the New York City Department of Buildings, Local Law 97. The law aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity and an 80% reduction in building gas emissions in New York City by 2050. The presentation describes this in detail, and goes on to describe preceding influential legislation, interim goals, causes of carbon emissions in New York City, exemptions, responsibilities, the annual Gas Emission reporting process, relevant penalties, alternative compliance measures, and applicable incentives by way of 23 colorful and animated, informative slides. It is particularly suited for all design professionals as well as building owners.
